During this phase, the body experiences progesterone dominance as the corpus luteum, formed from the ruptured follicle after ovulation, secretes high levels of progesterone. This hormone plays a vital role in maintaining the thickened uterine lining (endometrium), creating a supportive environment for a potential pregnancy.

Progesterone's presence helps sustain the uterine lining, which is necessary for a fertilized egg to implant and develop. Additionally, progesterone inhibits the release of further eggs during the cycle, preventing additional ovulations from occurring.

If fertilization and implantation do not take place, the corpus luteum begins to regress around day 22 of a typical 28-day cycle. This degeneration leads to a decrease in progesterone levels, signaling that pregnancy has not occurred. This process leads to ovulation around day 14 in a typical cycle, starting the cycle anew.
