Gestational diabetes is a special type of diabetes occurring in pregnant women. It requires more stringent glycaemic control to avoid various complications to the pregnant mother and her foetus.
Type II Diabetes Mellitus is predominant amongst adults with the major problem being reduced insulin sensitivity, which over longer periods may ultimately lead to insulin deficiency similar to type I Diabetes Mellitus.
Diabetes can cause various complications, some of which can be acute and serious like hypoglycaemia ketoacidosis. While there can be other chronic ones like microvascular and macrovascular complications which depend on proper long term management of diabetes.
Management of Diabetes is with
1. Dietary modifications.
2. Regular Exercise
3. Pharmacotherapy in form of oral hypoglycaemic agents and / or Insulin.
Diabetes being a chronic disease requires certain regular check-ups not only to asses glycemic control but also to detect any chronic complications like diabetic neuropathy, nephropathy and retinopathy.
