What is back pain?

Most of the people have experienced back pain at some point in their lives. Many cases of lower back pain are the result of a muscle strain.

The good news is that such back pain generally heals quickly in a few weeks or months. Depending on the causes of lower back pain can vary from person to person, so it is generally advisable to get a comprehensive back pain diagnosis from an experienced medical professional.

Most cases of acute back and/or lag pain may not require any investigations and will recover with initial treatment. Depending on the suspected diagnosis an x-ray, blood investigations and an MRI scan may be asked for.

Causes of back pain

Back pain may occur due to a variety of causes, the common ones of which are AS follows:

  • Pressure on nerve roots in the spine
  • Herniated Disc (Slipped disc)
  • Osteoporotic fractures of spine
  • Tumours of the spine
  • Infections in the vertebral column (including TB)
  • Muscle spasm or strain
  • Sciatica (usually secondary to herniated disc)
  • Degenerative disc disease
  • Facet arthropathy
  • Spinal Stenosis
Mechanical problems: A mechanical problem is due to the way your spine moves or the way you feel when you move your spine in certain ways.

Injuries: Spine injuries such as sprains and fractures can cause either short-lived or chronic back pain. Sprains are tears in the ligaments that support the spine, and they can occur from twisting or lifting improperly.

Acquired conditions and diseases: Many medical problems can cause or contribute to back pain.

Other causes of back pain include pregnancy; kidney stones or infections; endometriosis, which is the buildup of uterine tissue in places outside the uterus; and fibromyalgia, which causes fatigue and widespread muscle pain.
