Safe Medical Abortion

Medical Termination of Pregnancy
MTP in Pune

Medical termination of pregnancy, commonly known as abortion, refers to the procedure of ending a pregnancy to prevent childbirth. Also termed 'termination of pregnancy,' this process involves the use of specific medications rather than surgical methods. By administering these medicines, the pregnancy is safely terminated, providing women with a safe and effective option for managing their reproductive health. Medical termination of pregnancy is an essential aspect of reproductive rights and allows women to make informed decisions about their bodies and lives.

Reasons why women opt for abortion

There are various reasons why you may be contemplating having an abortion, and it's essential to recognise that each situation is unique. Some of the common reasons include:

1. Not feeling ready to be a parent yet or not wanting to become a parent at all.

2. Not being in a relationship with someone you want to have a family with.

3. A desire to finish school, focus on your career, or achieve other personal goals before starting a family.

4. A wish to provide the best possible care for the children you already have.

5. Being in an abusive relationship or experiencing a pregnancy resulting from sexual assault.

6. Having a health condition that makes pregnancy dangerous to your well-being.

We understand that making this decision can be challenging, and our caring team at Polaris Healthcare is here to provide the support and information you need to make the choice that is best for you. Your well-being and comfort are our top priorities throughout this process.

Diagnosis

To ensure your safety and well-being during this process, we place great importance on conducting a comprehensive diagnosis. As part of this assessment, our experienced OB-GYN will perform a pelvic ultrasound to accurately determine the duration and type of your pregnancy - whether it's a normal, ectopic, or molar pregnancy. In addition to the ultrasound, our caring team will recommend blood and urine tests to screen for any underlying medical conditions that could impact the procedure or your overall health.

These conditions may include anaemia, diabetes, high/low blood pressure, or sexually transmitted diseases. The results of these tests are crucial in enabling our doctors to proceed with the abortion procedure safely, ensuring that there are no potential risks or complications. Our compassionate staff will be by your side throughout this process, providing support, guidance, and personalised care.

Procedure

In cases where medical abortion fails, the pregnancy exceeds nine weeks, or a miscarriage remains incomplete, the obstetrician-gynaecologist may recommend a surgical abortion.

Before the procedure begins, the patient is given anaesthesia to ensure a painless and comfortable experience. The anaesthesia numbs any sensations, ensuring you are at ease during the entire surgical abortion process.

During the procedure, the OB-GYN carefully dilates the cervix to create a sufficient opening for the surgery. Subsequently, a small suction tube, known as a cannula, is gently inserted into the uterus. The cannula is connected to a gentle suction device, which enables the safe and effective removal of the embryo and any pregnancy tissue. The surgical abortion procedure is typically performed as an outpatient procedure, meaning you will not be required to stay overnight at the hospital. However, some rest and recovery time may be necessary after the surgery.

FAQ'S

1. What are the reasons why women opt for abortion?

A. Women may choose abortion for various personal reasons, such as not feeling ready to be a parent, not being in the right relationship to start a family, focusing on educational or career goals first, prioritizing existing children's well-being, dealing with an abusive relationship or sexual assault, or facing health conditions that make pregnancy dangerous.

2. What is a medical abortion, and when is it recommended?

A. A medical abortion, also known as non-surgical abortion, involves using medications like mifepristone and misoprostol to terminate pregnancies within the first seven weeks of the first trimester, as confirmed by ultrasound. It is typically recommended for women still in the early stages of pregnancy and prefer the comfort and privacy of their home for the procedure.

3. What is a surgical abortion, and when is it advised?

A. A surgical abortion, also known as an in-clinic abortion, is a safe and quick procedure that involves dilating the cervix and using gentle suction to remove the pregnancy from the uterus. It is typically performed between 5-12 weeks gestation, as determined by ultrasound. For pregnancies beyond 08-12 weeks, a surgical abortion is the safest and most effective option. Polaris Healthcare does not provide second-trimester abortions for patients whose pregnancies have already advanced past the 13-week mark.

4. How do I decide which abortion procedure is right for me?

A. The choice between a medical and surgical abortion depends on factors such as the stage of pregnancy and personal preferences. If you are within the early stages of the first trimester, a medical abortion allows you to undergo the process at home. However, if you are further along in your pregnancy, a surgical abortion is generally recommended for safety and efficacy. Our team at Polaris Healthcare will guide you through the decision-making process and answer any questions you may have.
